On Sunday night at the 2012 Oscars, "The Descendants" co-writer Jim Rash hit the stage with Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon to accept the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. They were handed their prize by Angelina Jolie, who had just turned heads in her breathtaking Versace black velvet gown, which featured one very sexy slit. To emphasize the look, Jolie had popped out her right leg; Jolie had popped out her right leg; the move prompted a Twitter account made in the leg's honor and Rash's funny onstage parody of it, right next to Jolie.
Shortly after Rash imitated her stance at the show, he was asked what had moved him to do it. He laughed off the moment, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "I had just seen her pose and thought it was bold and fun. And you know what? We have exactly the same legs!
Really, it was a loving tribute and nothing but."
Faxon, who also sort of got in on the joke with his leg, said, "Angelina's supremely hot. There's no way to do anything but honor her."
Rash also spoke to EW.com about the moment, noting that he had decided to go there when producers told nominees that when multiple people accepted an award, only one person could give a speech.
"Honestly, as soon as I saw her pose like that, I was like, 'I'm going to do that,' " said the writer, who also plays Dean Pelton on "Community." "I knew Alexander was going to take the reins, so I was like, 'How can I make a moment?' — selfishly. I almost thought it was a little Dean Pelton, somehow. I was bringing it all together. Because I have stood like that [on 'Community']."
As of press time, the Twitter account (under the handle "Angies Right Leg") made in that leg's honor had yet to comment on the moment, but sure had plenty to say about its own glory over the course of 18 tweets. One of the final tweets simply noted, "You have to admit I'm one hell of a leg."

Jobless claims drop to lowest since 2008

New applications for unemployment benefits dropped to the lowest level since March 2008 in another sign that the labor market was on the mend.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that seasonally-adjusted new claims fell to 348,000, down 13,000 and below the key 350,000 target?that economists believe is crucial for job growth. The 4-week moving average, considered a more accurate gauge?of the labor market,?was 365,250, a decrease of 1,750.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims rising to 365,000. The four-week moving average for new claims, seen as a better measure of labor market trends, fell 1,750 to 365,250 - the lowest since April 2008.?
New jobless claims have declined for three straight weeks.
Job gains have exceeded 200,000 for two straight months and the unemployment rate dropped to a three-year low of 8.3 percent in January.
"For the series to produce a third straight decline is unusual and suggests the improvement in the labor market is maintaining and even extending momentum as we enter February, for which next week will see the non-farm payroll surveyed. Giving further support to the positive message is a 100k decline in continuing claims in the week to February 4, to 3.426 mln, this the lowest level since August 23, 2008," said economist David Sloan of IFR Economics.
But considerable slack still remains, with 23.8 million Americans either out of work or underemployed. There are no job openings for nearly three out of every four unemployed.
A Labor Department official said there was nothing unusual in the state-level data and no state had been estimated.
The number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid tumbled 100,000 to 3.43 million in the week ended February 4. That was the lowest level since August 2008.
Economists had forecast so-called continuing claims falling to 3.50 million from a previously reported 3.52 million.
The number of Americans on emergency unemployment benefits rose 16,568 to 3.00 million in the week ended January 28, the latest week for which data is available.

She also pointed out that while the economy might still prove to be fertile ground for Republican attacks on Obama, the GOP can't seem to quit its self-destructive social platform.
"They're missing the point. Even though the job numbers may be a little better, people don't feel better. We still have over 20 percent of young people unemployed, we're still above 8 percent unemployment, we still have 4 million people's homes foreclosed. Why are they not playing on that terrain -- which is really where their advantage is?"

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran claimed Wednesday that it has taken two major steps toward mastering the production of nuclear fuel, a defiant move in response to increasingly tough Western sanctions over its controversial nuclear program.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad oversaw the insertion of the first Iranian domestically-made fuel rod into a research reactor in northern Tehran, the country's official IRNA news agency reported.
Separately, the semiofficial Fars agency reported that a "new generation of Iranian centrifuges" had been installed and had gone into operation at the country's main uranium enrichment facility at Natanz in central Iran.
The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is aimed at producing atomic weapons, a charge Tehran denies, insisting it's geared for peaceful purposes only, such as energy production.
The crisis has already resulted in sanctions placed on Iran's economy, and there are fears that it could escalate to military action.
Iran's nuclear announcements came as the country said Wednesday it halted oil exports to six European countries ? the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Portugal ? in response to recent new European Union sanctions.
Iran has said it is forced to manufacture nuclear fuel rods, which provide fuel for reactors, on its own since international sanctions ban it from buying them on foreign markets. In January, Iran said it had produced its first such fuel rod.
IRNA boasted that the nuclear fuel announcement is the final step in the entire cycle of nuclear fuel ? from extracting uranium ore to producing the finished rods.
Fuel rods are tube metals containing pellets made of low-enriched uranium. The rod is then inserted into a fuel assembly, which then is placed in the core of the reactor.
IRNA said the nuclear fuel rods were produced at Iran's nuclear fuel fabrication plant in Isfahan, central Iran.
The centrifuges that Iran claims to be now manufacturing are machines that are used to enrich uranium. Low-enriched uranium ? at around 3.5 percent ? can be used to fuel a reactor to generate electricity, which Iran says is the intention of its program. Obama birth-control rule stokes election-year fight (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The top Republican in the U.S. Congress on Wednesday denounced President Barack Obama's new rule on contraceptives as an assault on "religious freedom" and vowed to overturn it, as the White House sought to prevent the issue from becoming an election-year liability.
Fanning a political firestorm, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner joined an outcry from religious leaders and social conservatives over a requirement that health insurance plans, including those at Catholic hospitals and universities, offer birth control to women.
Seeking to defuse a controversy that has roiled the 2012 presidential race, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama was sensitive to religious beliefs on contraception and wants to find a way to implement the decision that can "allay some of the concerns expressed."
Republicans have seized upon the issue, seeing it as a chance to paint Obama as anti-religion and put him on the defensive at a time when signs of economic improvement appear to have energized his re-election bid.
The White House seemed to have been caught by surprise by the fury of the response, and stepped up efforts to calm objections by suggesting the door might be open to compromise.
"This attack ... on religious freedom in our country cannot stand and will not stand," Boehner vowed in a speech on the floor of his chamber.
The escalating fight centers on a provision in the 2010 healthcare law that requires health insurance to cover basic birth control services for women - even at Catholic charities, hospitals and universities.
Catholic bishops contend the policy infringes on religious liberty because the church does not condone the use of birth control pills or other contraceptives.
Boehner said if the president refuses to rescind the measure, Congress will do so legislatively.
But such a bill would have little chance of getting through a divided Congress. While Boehner may be able to win backing in the Republican-dominated House, he faces problems in the Senate, which is controlled by Obama's fellow Democrats.
Still, Obama is in a political bind. A retreat would anger his liberal base, while refusal to budge could alienate some Catholic voters.
SEEKING TO CALM CONCERNS
At the White House, Carney said the administration was "focused on implementation of this rule," but made clear that it had time to address opponents' concerns. He offered no specific concessions.
"There are ways to approach this that would ensure that the rule is implemented so that women have access to these important healthcare services no matter where they work, but also hopefully would allay some of the concerns," Carney said.
The rule has drawn heavy fire from the political right, including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Carney took a swipe at Romney on Wednesday, calling him an "odd messenger" to be attacking Obama on the issue. He said it was "ironic" because Romney was criticizing Obama for pursuing a policy that is "virtually identical with the one that was in place when he was governor of Massachusetts."
"In a case like this sometimes folks try to make political hay out of it," Carney said.
Romney, speaking to reporters in Atlanta, shot back that Carney "needs to check his history," saying the birth-control provision was already in effect when he took office and that he tried to get it removed.
With the matter threatening to explode into a major election-year fight, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he and fellow Senate Democrats support the president.
"Some have decided, again, to use women's health for political football," said U.S. Representative Lois Capps, a Democrat.
Backers of Obama's new rule say employees of faith-based groups should have access to birth control services in their health insurance coverage.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, an outspoken opponent of the rule, said he and fellow Senate Republicans were considering their options.
"The short answer is that we're discussing the appropriate response," McConnell told reporters after a closed-door meeting with his members.
The Obama administration said on Tuesday it was willing to work with church-affiliated employers to implement the new policy, which was finalized on January 20 but will not take effect until next year.
During the weekend, clergy from the Catholic Church called for congregations across the country to pressure Obama to back down.
Boehner said, "Americans of every faith and political persuasion have mobilized in objection" to the rule, which he said "constitutes an unambiguous attack on religious freedom."
"This rule would require faith-based employers ... to provide services they consider immoral," he said, including, "sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs and devices, and contraception."
