More Google Chromebooks Coming, Advertising Could Help Lower Prices

Sundar Pichai of Google. ?Image credit: Joanna Stern / ABC News

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. - Google has dominated the smartphone market with its Android operating system, but it also has its Chrome OS operating system, which is built on its Chrome browser. The Chrome system, which was released last year to run on devices when they're connected to the Internet, is based entirely around the browser and the Chrome apps that run in the browser.

Google has just released an update to its Chrome OS, and along with it a new $450 Samsung Series 5 Chromebook has been announced. ?There will be more laptops like it on the way, said Google's Senior Vice President of Chrome & Apps, Sundar Pichai.

"Just like with Android, we're in early stages of enabling an ecosystem. This year, we're working very closely with Intel, and there are many OEMs [Original Equipment Manufacturers] working with Chromebooks," Pichai told ABC News at the All Things D conference here in California.

In repsonse to the complaint that the laptops have been unreasonably expensive for what you get, Pichai said that will also change. "You'll start seeing Chromebooks spanning many price points. There are a variety of user scenarios; we picked the middle point to start at."

When ABC News asked about the idea of using advertising to subsidize the cost of the laptops, much as Amazon does on its Kindle tablets and e-readers, Pichai said, "It's not lost on us that we can use advertising to provide better value propositions as well."

Internet traffic to explode; thank your phone and tablet

1 hr.

Buckle up and hold onto your phones, tablets, digital?video clips and Wi-Fi connections, because they're all?contributing to a global?explosion in Internet traffic. It's?expected to increase four times to 1.3 zettabytes by 2016, according to Cisco's VIsual Networking Index Forecast.

That's a lot of traffic and a whole?lot of bytes (one zettabyte is equal to a trillion gigabytes).

By 2016, Internet traffic globally is expected to reach 150 petabytes an hour, or "the?equivalent of 278 million people streaming an HD movie ...?simultaneously," Cisco says.?

The highest-traffic generating countries in 2016 will be the United States, followed by China, says Cisco.

What's driving this growth? A good part?of it are all the phones, tablets and other "smart devices," including TV sets with Internet connections, that we're adopting.

By 2016, there will be nearly 18.9 billion network connections ? "almost 2.5 connections for each person on earth" ? compared with 10.3 billion network connections in 2011, Cisco says.

Last year, while?PCs "generated 94 percent of consumer Internet traffic," by 2016, that will decrease to 81 percent. Meanwhile, mobile?Internet data traffic is forecast to increase 18 times from 2011 to 2016.

There are other factors, too, Cisco says:

  • By 2016, there will be 3.4 billion Internet users; that's about 45 percent of the world's projected population.
  • More than half of the world's Internet traffic is expected to come from Wi-Fi connections by 2016.
  • Meanwhile, the average fixed broadband speed will increase "nearly fourfold," from 9 megabits per second in 2011 to 34 megabits per second in 2016.
  • More video, video, video. By 2016,?1.2 million video minutes?will?"travel the Internet every second."?In 2011, there were an estimated 792 million Internet video users, Cisco says; by 2016 there will be 1.5 billion. For businesses worldwide, "desktop videoconferencing is projected to be the fastest-growing service, with 36.4 million users in 2011, increasing to 218.9 million users in 2016."

"Each of us increasingly connects to the network via multiple devices in our always-on connected lifestyles," said Suraj Shetty, Cisco's vice president of product and solutions marketing, in a statement. "Whether by video phone calls, movies on tablets, web-enabled TVs, or desktop video conferencing, the sum of our actions not only creates demand for zettabytes of bandwidth, but also dramatically changes the network requirements needed to deliver on the expectations of this 'new normal.' "

"New normal" or more digital insanity? Only you will be the judge of that.

Brother of Blind Chinese Dissident Returns Home

A rights lawyer says the older brother of blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng has returned to his village in eastern China after escaping guards on Tuesday and travelling to Beijing.

Attorney Ding Xikui said Sunday that he was told by a friend of the family that Chen Guangfu had returned to Dongshigu village after seeking legal advice in the capital about how to protect his son from what he says are retaliatory criminal charges.

Chen Kegui has been charged with attempted murder following a clash with officials who burst into his home after discovering his uncle had fled.

Chen Guangcheng, escaped house arrest in April, seeking protection at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. The situation created a diplomatic standoff between the U.S. and China that was resolved when Beijing allowed him to fly to the U.S. to study.

Human rights activists say the authorities have increased their repression against Chen Guangcheng's family, who have been effectively under house arrest in Dongshigu.

How to pick a Portland - Real Estate Agent PDX

May 29th 2012. Since I work with Portland Real Estate Agents everyday on a number of transactions and hear all sorts of things from various people, I thought I?d write a post on choosing a real estate agent (even if you don?t choose myself, though I hope you?d consider it).

1. Customer Service. No matter how experienced and agent is, no matter how much education they have, no matter how good their marketing package is, if they don?t have a customer service focus, don?t pick them. Customer service means picking up the phone or at least calling back within the same day. Customer service means updating the client regularly as the transaction progresses. No Portland Real Estate Agent is worth your time unless they focus on your needs. Truly, real estate is a customer service job, much more than it is a sales occupation. Check out the real estate agent?s reviews! They will give you an important clue.

2. Education. Some people would pick experience as number two and while I have plenty of experience as a top selling agent, I would disagree. There are a ton of agents out there who have been in the business over ten years. However, time and time again, I see experienced Portland Real Estate Agents make the worst kind of mistakes. The real estate industry is constantly changing and it takes a lot of education and awareness to stay up to date with current laws, practices, and industry needs. Education is a primary focus for myself. Look for those Realtor designations and find out what they mean!

3. Experience. As many people have said, there is no subsitute for experience. I?ve been?a Portland Realtor?since 2003, and I can tell you my clients today are better off than my clients in 2003! I?m always happy when clients give a new agent in the company a chance, but at the same time?they better have a more experienced Portland Real Estate Agent looking?over their shoulder.

4. Marketing Ability. This applies to Portland sellers agents, not Portland buyers agents. If you are looking to sell your Portland home, an agent?s marketing ability is key.?A real estate agent?can have all three things above: great customer service, education, and experience, but they won?t sell your home in a tough market unless their real estate marketing package is truly amazing. I?ve spend a ton of time and money to ensure my listing marketing package is the best in Portland.

The Worst Union in America: How the California Teachers Association betrayed the schools and crippled the state

In 1962, as tensions ran high between school districts and unions across the country, members of the National Education Association gathered in Denver for the organization?s 100th annual convention. Among the speakers was Arthur F. Corey, executive director of the California Teachers Association (CTA). ?The strike as a weapon for teachers is inappropriate, unprofessional, illegal, outmoded, and ineffective,? Corey told the crowd. ?You can?t go out on an illegal strike one day and expect to go back to your classroom and teach good citizenship the next.?

Fast-forward nearly 50 years to May 2011, when the CTA?now the single most powerful special interest in California?organized a ?State of Emergency? week to agitate for higher taxes in one of the most overtaxed states in the nation. A CTA document suggested dozens of ways for teachers to protest, including following state legislators incessantly, attempting to close major transportation arteries, and boycotting companies, such as Microsoft, that backed education reform. The week?s centerpiece was an occupation of the state capitol by hundreds of teachers and student sympathizers from the Cal State University system, who clogged the building?s hallways and refused to leave. Police arrested nearly 100 demonstrators for trespassing, including then?CTA president David Sanchez. The protesting teachers had left their jobs behind, even though their students were undergoing important statewide tests that week. With the passage of 50 years, the CTA?s notions of ?good citizenship? had vanished.

So had high-quality public education in California. Seen as a national leader in the classroom during the 1950s and 1960s, the country?s largest state is today a laggard, competing with the likes of Mississippi and Washington, D.C., at the bottom of national rankings. The Golden State?s education tailspin has been blamed on everything from class sizes to the property-tax restrictions enforced by Proposition 13 to an influx of Spanish-speaking students. But no portrait of the system?s downfall would be complete without a depiction of the CTA, a political behemoth that blocks meaningful education reform, protects failing and even criminal educators, and inflates teacher pay and benefits to unsustainable levels.

The CTA began its transformation in September 1975, when Governor Jerry Brown signed the Rodda Act, which allowed California teachers to bargain collectively. Within 18 months, 600 of the 1,000 local CTA chapters moved to collective bargaining. As the union?s power grew, its ranks nearly doubled, from 170,000 in the late 1970s to approximately 325,000 today. By following the union?s directions and voting in blocs in low-turnout school-board elections, teachers were able to handpick their own supervisors?a system that private-sector unionized workers would envy. Further, the organization that had once forsworn the strike began taking to the picket lines. Today, the CTA boasts that it has launched more than 170 strikes in the years since Rodda?s passage.

The CTA?s most important resource, however, isn?t a pool of workers ready to strike; it?s a fat bank account fed by mandatory dues that can run more than $1,000 per member. In 2009, the union?s income was more than $186 million, all of it tax-exempt. The CTA doesn?t need its members? consent to spend this money on politicking, whether that?s making campaign contributions or running advocacy campaigns to obstruct reform. According to figures from the California Fair Political Practices Commission (a public institution) in 2010, the CTA had spent more than $210 million over the previous decade on political campaigning?more than any other donor in the state. In fact, the CTA outspent the pharmaceutical industry, the oil industry, and the tobacco industrycombined.

All this money has helped the union rack up an imposing number of victories. The first major win came in 1988, with the passage of Proposition 98. That initiative compelled California to spend more than 40 percent of its annual budget on education in grades K?12 and community college. The spending quota eliminated schools? incentive to get value out of every dollar: since funding was locked in, there was no need to make things run cost-effectively. Thanks to union influence on local school boards, much of the extra money?about $450 million a year?went straight into teachers? salaries. Prop. 98?s malign effects weren?t limited to education, however: by essentially making public school funding an entitlement rather than a matter of discretionary spending, it hastened California?s erosion of fiscal discipline. In recent years, estimates of mandatory spending?s share of the state?s budget have run as high as 85 percent, making it highly difficult for the legislature to confront the severe budget crises of the past decade.

In 1991, the CTA took to the ramparts again to combat Proposition 174, a ballot initiative that would have made California a national leader in school choice by giving families universal access to school vouchers. When initiative supporters began circulating the petitions necessary to get it onto the ballot, some CTA members tried to intimidate petition signers physically. The union also encouraged people to sign the petition multiple times in order to throw the process into chaos. ?There are some proposals so evil that they should never go before the voters,? explained D. A. Weber, the CTA?s president. One of the consultants who organized the petitions testified in a court declaration at the time that people with union ties had offered him $400,000 to refrain from distributing them. Another claimed that a CTA member had tried to run him off the road after a debate on school choice.

Weber and his followers weren?t successful in keeping the proposition off the ballot, but they did manage to delay it for two years, giving themselves time to organize a counteroffensive. They ran ads, recalls Ken Khachigian, the former White House speechwriter who headed the Yes on 174 campaign, ?claiming that a witches? coven would be eligible for the voucher funds and [could] set up a school of its own.? They threatened to field challengers against political candidates who supported school choice. They bullied members of the business community who contributed money to the pro-voucher effort. When In-N-Out Burger donated $25,000 to support Prop. 174, for instance, the CTA threatened to press schools to drop contracts with the company.

In 1993, Prop. 174 finally came to a statewide vote. The union had persuaded March Fong Eu, the CTA-endorsed secretary of state, to alter the proposition?s heading on the ballot from?PARENTAL CHOICE?to?EDUCATION VOUCHERS?a change in wording that cost Prop. 174 ten points in the polls, according to Myron Lieberman in his book? The Teacher Unions. The initiative, which had originally enjoyed 2?1 support among California voters, managed to garner only a little over 30 percent of the vote. Prop. 174?s backers had been outspent by a factor of eight, with the CTA alone dropping $12.5 million on the opposition campaign?

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is paying tribute to the nation's fallen warriors on Memorial Day, attending a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and honoring those who died during the Vietnam War.

The president was to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, and then marking the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

In an election year, Obama has touted his work to bring U.S. combat troops home from Iraq and wind down the conflict in Afghanistan. Before military audiences and in a campaign ad released last week, he credits U.S. servicemen who helped in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

With so many troops returning home from their service, Obama says the U.S. needs to return the favor.

"We have to serve them and their families as well as they have served us," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. "By making sure that they get the health care and benefits they need; by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families; and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect."

Veterans could play a significant role in the 2012 election. Exit polls in 2008 showed that Obama was supported by about 44 percent of voters who said they served in the military, while 54 percent voted for John McCain, a former Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war for more than five years during the Vietnam War.

Republican Mitt Romney was scheduled to appear Monday with McCain in San Diego, home to a large number of military personnel and veterans. Romney has made the case that too many veterans are returning home to poor job prospects, casting blame on Obama's economic policies.

A Bureau of Labor Statistics report in March found that 12.1 percent of U.S. Armed Forces veterans who served on active duty after September 2001 were unemployed in 2011. The unemployment rate for all veterans was 8.3 percent.

Several closely watched states in the election have large blocs of military voters. Florida, home to several military installations, has more than 1.6 million veterans, according to the Veterans Administration. Pennsylvania has nearly 1 million veterans, while Virginia and North Carolina each have about 800,000 veterans living in their states.

The president and first lady Michelle Obama were starting the day with a breakfast at the White House for families who have lost loved ones in combat.

What Causes Back Pain ? Understanding Why It Happens | Book Link

If you?re trying to find out the causes of back pain, this article will provide you with some answers. The fact is, however, that this is a symptom that has a great many causes, and sometimes it takes medical tests to be certain. Discovering, or recognizing, what is causing your back pain can help you find out how to handle it, but it may not always be enough information to cause it to stop altogether. Although we may wonder where the back pain comes from, it?s usually not that hard to figure out. If you moved some heavy furniture the day before and woke up with a backache, you can be pretty sure of what happened. You should definitely see your doctor if your back continues to hurt and the pain will not dissipate. A physician will always be able to determine what is probably wrong with you through doing a series of tests. CT scans or x-rays may be used in order to determine what is wrong. To help eliminate any guesswork, your doctor may prescribe an MRI scan to find out exactly what is wrong. Do you carry a briefcase or laptop with you? If you do, it is possible that the weight from this object or device may be causing the back pain that you are suffering from. Sometimes it?s not only the weight you?re carrying, but the way it?s distributed. A prime example of how this can affect many women is that some of them carry their purse on one side more than the other. If possible, carry less with you at any one time. If you?re going on a vacation, or a business trip, always use a bag that rolls. This really goes for anything that you carry with you continuously. It simply should have rollers that will make taking it with you much easier. Anyone suffering from back pain that is pregnant should know that the unborn child may actually be causing your lower back discomfort. It is a known scientific fact that certain hormones that a woman has during pregnancy can adversely affect her vertebrae. There are many exercises that you can do that can help you relieve back pain that you may be suffering from. Whether you visit your doctor, or take a local exercise class, you can learn how to do these exercises that will help you out. While you?re pregnant, the best thing to do is to perform these exercises which can help reduce the amount of pain and currently are experiencing. Suffering from back pain is very distressing. In fact, it can make it extremely difficult to even rise out of bed each day. You will more easily be able to prevent back pain from returning if you have been able to find out the root cause of your pain. If your back pain is caused by health issues, it?s wise to get those problems taken care of first. If not, simply pay attention to your overall health and fitness, your diet, and any other issues in your life that may lead to back pain. learn more about healing back pain dvd or the similar topic of back pain therapy .

Memorial Day grief for military suicide families

Charlie Mahoney / Prime for msnbc.com

Kim Ruocco poses outside her home in Newbury, Mass., on Thursday. Ruocco is the national director of suicide education and outreach at the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, or TAPS. Marine Maj. John Ruocco, her husband, killed himself after a deployment in Iraq in 2004.

By Rebecca Ruiz

For the family and friends of service members who died by suicide, Memorial Day can be not only a solemn day, but also a painful reminder that military suicides are not treated the same as combat deaths.?

Kim Ruocco, the national director of suicide education and outreach at Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, or TAPS, has experienced this isolating grief firsthand. This weekend, she is bringing together about 100 suicide survivors at TAPS' annual Memorial Day weekend National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp for Young Survivors.

"[Suicide survivors] are surrounded by people whose loved ones were killed in action," Ruocco said. "There's a real sense that their loved one's death was not an honorable death."

Ruocco's husband, Marine Corps Maj. John Ruocco, killed himself seven years ago. He?was a Cobra helicopter pilot who ran 75 combat missions during a five-month deployment in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004. He had struggled with depression in the past, particularly after a training accident in the 1990s when two Cobras collided in midair, and he lost four friends.

In February 2005, while living temporarily in a hotel room near Camp Pendleton in California, awaiting a redeployment to Iraq and considering mental health counseling, John Ruocco hanged himself.?

"He was so ashamed of being depressed and not being able to do his job," Kim Ruocco, 49, said. He was going to seek treatment, but she believes that "when he?sat there and thought about what it meant to get help, how people would see you, how young Marines viewed him, how his peers viewed him ... he thought the problem was him."

Kim Ruocco, who has a master's degree in social work, provides counseling resources to suicide survivors, helps family members secure benefits and facilitates support groups. TAPS also tries to change procedures and policies that can be hurtful to suicide survivors, such as the exclusion of service members who died by suicide from state memorials and?the distribution to suicide survivors of different Gold Star pins than the ones given to families when a service member dies in action.

This weekend's?four-day event for survivors is expected to draw more than 2,000 participants. It?will feature panels and peer support groups on dealing with grief,?sessions on spirituality and meditation,?and events for children.

In 2011, 301 active-duty service members died by suicide, according to the Department of Defense. More than half of those deaths occurred in the Army, where the suicide rate last year was projected at 24.1 per 100,000, outpacing the national rate adjusted for the comparison of 18.6 people per 100,000.?A study released earlier this year by the U.S. Army Public Health Command found that the number of active-duty soldiers who committed suicide increased 80 percent between 2004 and 2008.

Though the Department of Defense has worked to de-stigmatize mental illness in recent years through various initiatives and training programs, challenges remain. On Thursday, Maj. Gen. Dana J.H. Pittard, commanding general of Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, retracted a blog piece he posted on Jan. 19 in which he called suicide "an absolutely selfish act."?

"I am personally fed up with soldiers who are choosing to take their own lives so that others can clean up their mess," he wrote.?

Dennis R. Swanson, a public affairs officer at Fort Bliss, told msnbc.com that the post was written in an emotional moment after Pittard had attended two memorial services for soldiers who killed themselves, and then learned of a third suicide. In the 2012 fiscal year, there have been six suicides at Fort Bliss.?

In his retraction,?Pittard apologized for his "hurtful statement," which he said was "not in line with?the Army's guidance regarding sensitivity to suicide."?

Can WWII film hidden by Army help veterans?

"We must continue to do better each and every day, reaching out, encouraging?and helping those in need," he wrote.?

Ruocco worries that Pittard's original comments, which were removed from his blog, may have done damage. "By saying those words, he is telling the troops and their families that thinking about suicide is a weakness, it's not a mental illness," she said.?

Culture of stoicism
Leslie?McCaddon, 36, knows this conflict well. Her husband, Army Capt. Michael?McCaddon, a doctor,?killed himself in March. McCaddon, who served on a bomb squad on a deployment to Bosnia in the 1990s and was a first responder at the Oklahoma City bombing, battled severe depression for seven years and had a family history of suicide.

McCaddon said she urged him to seek help and he sporadically attended counseling sessions. But Michael, 37, was completing his residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, and the demanding schedule made it difficult to seek intense treatment, she said. Michael also did not want to let his colleagues down or become a liability, McCaddon said.?

"Personally, I have visions where mental health counseling is as standard and routine and mandatory as physical training," said McCaddon, who will attend the TAPS gathering for the first time with her three children this weekend. "All the men and women can grumble and say that?s a waste of time, but they?d still go because it?d be their place of duty. Someone like Mike, if he?d been told he had to be there, he would have gone."

McCaddon believes that the military culture of stoicism, and the stigmatization of mental illness, kept her husband from seeking help for fear of ruining his career.?Many service members worry that they'll be passed over for promotions or even discharged after admitting and receiving treatment for a mental illness, Ruocco said.

'Somebody's got to talk to people'
It is the same fear that Bob Bagosy says keeps friends and colleagues of struggling service members from admitting how severe mental health issues can be. His son, Tommy, was considering in-patient mental health treatment in 2010, but repeatedly heard from fellow service members that it might hurt his career. Tommy, a 25-year-old Marine sergeant, had completed a tour in Fallujah, Iraq, from 2006 to 2007, and a second tour in Afghanistan in 2009. He sustained a traumatic brain injury during his deployment and had post-traumatic stress disorder.

When he threatened suicide to his wife, Katie, she asked Tommy's psychologist at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina to mandate in-patient treatment. Tommy was brought in to make those arrangements, but then walked out of the office, and after an encounter with the military police, shot himself to death.

Military women and suicide: Home safe but not sound

Bagosy believes that Tommy's life might have been saved had there been more candid discussion about struggles like his. "Somebody's got to talk to people," Bagosy said. "They've got to hear that just because you?re a Marine, and you survived the wars, does not mean you're not subject to having these thoughts."

Bagosy, a former reservist Marine, does his part by telling Tommy's story to groups of Marines, urging them to seek help if they need it.

He has been involved with TAPS' suicide survivor program since 2010 and will attend the gathering this weekend. "This group of people became my other family, my surrogate family. It?s an automatic bonding," he said.

Providing that support is the core of Ruocco's work, and her focus is helping survivors change their perspective on the tragedy they experienced. Their loved ones served and sacrificed, sustaining psychological and sometimes physical wounds, Ruocco tells survivors -- they just died differently.

"How they died defines it instead of how they lived," Ruocco said. "I try to get them to shift to how they lived."

Visible Life

After so many months of TTC, I found Ramos's step-by-step description soothing, even appealing, for its order and predictability, for the way it makes conception?that long-elusive goal?visible. If the oocyte is fertilized, Ramos will see the formation of two pronuclei, then the fusion of the diploid cell, or zygote. Over the next few days, as the zygote is incubated at 98.6 degrees, she will track its development in the lab. Ideally, the zygote will form four even, smooth cells, then eight. Sometimes, Ramos can wait for the embryo to become a morula, which looks like a blackberry, or a blastula, which looks like a soccer ball, before transferring the embryo to the woman's uterus. "Look! How beautiful!" Ramos said, showing me images of embryos she had worked with. She had folders and folders full of these images, and they were, at every stage, strangely beautiful, as were her tools: the polished steel and glass pipet used to move the embryos, the tiny, needlelike cryoloop used to cryopreserve the leftover embryos using vitrification.

Annual ice show showcases local figure skaters ? West Life ...

Meagan Steed

North Olmsted

This past weekend marked the 11th annual Ice Show held at the North Olmsted Recreation Center. The event featured ice skaters from the Cleveland Edges Skating Club, local figure skaters and ice skaters in the Learn to Skate program, as well as youth hockey players.
The ?Ticket to Hollywood?-themed show was a theatrical event set to music from various Hollywood hits, such as Grease and Sound of Music, and showcasing a large number of local skaters. The event was made possible through the work of Jeff Marshall, program director of the Cleveland Edges Skating Club, and Betsy Drenski, North Olmsted parks and recreation commissioner.

?Jeff Marshall is the brains behind the show,? Drenski said. ?He designs the music, lights and the choreography while I do the paperwork.?

The event was held on the main rink, which was completely transformed for the occasion. The glass surrounding the rink was removed, bleachers were placed on a raised platform along the length of the ice for additional seating and theatrical lights and curtains decorated the space surrounding the center of the ice rink.

?We are trying to give the show a really good entertainment value for the audience,? Marshall said. ?We want to make it a theatrical production and a positive experience for the kids.?

The Cleveland Edges Skating Club, which competes both locally and nationally, is the longest established synchronized club in Cleveland, and became an official U.S. Figure Skating club in 2007. The 200 figure skaters practice and perform year-round. The club has been based at the North Olmsted Recreation Center since 2003.

Potential skaters auditioned in February in order for the costumes to be ordered and arrive in time, and practices began in March. Practices were held once a week for the individual groups until the Wednesday prior to the show, when every group came together for a full run-through and a dress rehearsal the following evening.

Since the event?s reinstatement 11 years ago, it has grown from 700 guests to over 1,600. The Learn to Skate program at the recreation center teaches 150-300 kids every six weeks the fundamentals of ice skating, and the hockey program for all ages is still strong.

?We need to keep the young hockey club strong and to bring more people into the skating program,? Drenski said on her hopes for the program?s future. ?We need to continue to build, and we would like to have more after-school programs. We would also like to work with Youth Challenge and offer the program to more people who would benefit from that.?
