NPR 'Car Talk' duo retiring; reruns to continue

The Magliozzi brothers said Friday, June 8, 2012, they will stop making new episodes of their comic auto advice show at the end of September, 25 years after "Car Talk" began in Boston. The show airs every Saturday morning and is National Public Radio's most popular program. Older brother Tom is 74 years old and the brothers say it's time to stop and smell the cappuccino. (AP) ? The comic mechanics on NPR's "Car Talk" are pulling in to the garage.

Brothers Tom and Ray Magliozzi said Friday they will stop making new episodes of their joke-filled auto advice show at the end of September, 25 years after "Car Talk" began in Boston. Repurposed versions of old shows will stay on National Public Radio indefinitely, however.

The show airs every Saturday morning and is NPR's most popular program.

"We've managed to avoid getting thrown off NPR for 25 years, giving tens of thousands of wrong answers and had a hell of a time every week talking to callers," Ray Magliozzi said. "The stuff in our archives still makes us laugh. So we figured, why keep slaving over a hot microphone?"

The duo will continue writing their "Dear Tom and Ray" column twice a week, NPR said.

With their byplay and Boston accents, "Car Talk" was as much about laughs as motor advice. On last week's show, a caller confessed that she had broken the clutches of some ex-boyfriends' cars and was now worrying that she was damaging her own.

"That might be the reason none of your relationships lasted," she was told.

The two men proved that public radio didn't have to be stuffy, said Doug Berman, executive producer of the show. "Car Talk" began as a local call-in show on Boston's BUR radio in 1977. It's now on 660 stations across the country, with some 3.3 million listeners a week.

"The guys are culturally right up there with Mark Twain and the Marx Brothers," Berman said. "They will stand the test of time. People will still be enjoying them years from now. They're that good."

The staff has stored and logged some 12,500 phone calls since the show began, rating them in order of their entertainment value, Berman said. They will take the best and use them for the repurposed shows. Berman said he figured there was about eight years' worth of strong material without the show having to repeat itself again.

"I'm the producer of all their shows and I can't remember most of" the calls, he said.

"Car Talk" has tested out the repurposed show and is convinced they will work. There's a strong wish among NPR stations to keep the show going even if there isn't fresh material, he said.

Berman said he knew the retirement was a possibility; Tom is 74. That didn't stop Ray, 63, from mocking him. "My brother has always been work-averse," he said. "Now, apparently, even the one hour a week is killing him."

In a goodbye message posted on their website and titled "Time to Get Even Lazier," Tom wrote, "We're hoping to be like 'I Love Lucy' and air 10 times a day on 'NPR at Nite' in 2075."

Soccer stakes rise as Nike presses on Adidas' turf

(Reuters) - When Germany faces Portugal at the Euro 2012 soccer championship on Saturday, another battle is playing out between sponsors Nike Inc and Adidas AG for the top spot in selling gear for the world's most popular sport.

The Portuguese team's Nike-sponsored red jerseys, set against the white Adidas jerseys worn by Germany, underscore how much headway Nike has made against Adidas, once the dominant brand for all things soccer.

Adidas has been associated with soccer (called football outside North America) since the German company was founded in 1949. Nike, whose roots date back to the 1960s, did not enter the soccer business until 1994. Two years later, it scored an impressive goal when it signed Brazil's national team to a sponsorship deal.

"The Brazil deal gave presence and profile. It was also a signal of strategic intent," said Simon Chadwick, professor of sports business strategy and marketing at Coventry University Business School in Coventry, England.

Since then, the Beaverton, Oregon-based Nike has spent heavily on marketing. It also sponsors popular teams and players, including Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo. The most recent sponsorship battles between Adidas and Nike were fought over the German and French national soccer teams.

Adidas managed to keep its home team, but France was won over by the money Nike offered, which was reportedly north of 300 million euros ($374.01 million). By comparison, Nike's deal with Brazil in 1996 was worth 100 million pounds.

As the top sportswear brand in the world, Nike has been investing in soccer to increase its international presence. Soccer has about 2 billion fans worldwide, followed by basketball with 1.2 billion, according to sports research consultancies REPUCOM and SPORT+MARKT.

Companies sponsor popular teams and players to market their products in the hope of influencing fans. Sporting events like the UEFA Euro 2012 can boost sales of soccer merchandise by about 5 percent, according to Morningstar analyst Paul Swinand.

Sales of soccer goods will top 4 billion euros in 2012, according to Peter Rohlmann at German consulting firm PR Marketing. He estimates Adidas' market share at 38 percent, with Nike closing in quickly at 36 percent.

HISTORY, PRESTIGE

Some experts say Adidas is defending not just its merchandise sales against Nike, but also trying to safeguard its history and prestige in the sports world.

"Nike is really making a concerted effort to grow in the international market. If you want to be an international player, you've got to have a strong soccer business," said Matt Powell, analyst for SportsOneSource, based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"It is really hard to measure the dollar value of sales against these events. It is much more about branding and credibility," he added.

Adidas said it expects to sell more than 1.5 billion euros ($1.87 billion) of soccer-related gear in 2012, helped by the Euro 2012 championship. Adidas stripes will be seen on six of the 16 teams taking part: reigning champions Spain, plus Ukraine, Denmark, Germany, Greece and Russia.

Nike, with annual sales of more than $20 billion, said it had $1.8 billion in sales from soccer in fiscal 2011. The Nike swoosh will be on five teams: Portugal, France, the Netherlands, Croatia and Poland.

Nike unit Umbro - a brand the company is planning to sell off - will outfit three teams: England, Sweden and Ireland. Puma has two teams: Italy and the Czech Republic.

FICKLE FANS

Experts say Adidas has an edge over Nike in Europe because of its partnerships with soccer governing body FIFA and popular clubs like Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

"In European markets, there are still preconceptions that Adidas is historically associated with football and Nike isn't," said Chadwick, but he added: "Over the next 10 years, conceivably we will see Nike overtake Adidas."

Adidas football marketing manager Michael Kresser said last month the company aims to bring at least one product innovation to the soccer market each year. "We are market leaders and we will do everything to maintain that position," he said in an interview.

Nike has its plans in place as well. "There is a relentless drive for bringing in new products," said Charlie Brooks, Nike's communications director for football.

"Football is massively important. We made a strategic decision in 1994 that if we are going to be the world's leading sports brand, we need to lead in football," Brooks said.

Andreas Ullmann, head of market intelligence at SPORT+MARKT, expects about 7 million replica jerseys to be sold for Euro 2012, which alone guarantees retail sales of at least 500 million euros ($623.35 million).

Nike has worked toward being a global brand that "has its finger on the pulse of football," Ullman said. Still, he noted that Adidas is an established rival and is often better-connected, making it difficult for Nike to overtake the German company.

"I don't think Nike can do anything in football other than what it is already doing, other than continuing to invest in it to keep building its equity and tell fans it's in it for a long term. It is not just about money, it is about passion for football," said Coventry Business School's Chadwick. ($1 = 0.8021 Euro) ($1 = 0.6486 British pounds)

(AP) ? Japan's leader appealed to the nation Friday to accept that two nuclear reactors that remained shuttered after the Fukushima disaster must be restarted to protect the economy and people's livelihoods.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said the government has taken ample safety measures to ensure the two reactors in western Japan would not leak radiation if an earthquake or tsunami as severe as last year's should strike them.

All 50 of Japan's workable reactors are offline for maintenance and safety concerns since the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, swept into a coastal plant in Fukushima and sparked the world's second-worst nuclear disaster.

The two reactors at the Ohi nuclear plant are the first two ready to resume generating power, but the public has shown great concern that government failures worsened last year's crisis and may recur.

Nuclear energy is crucial for Japanese society, Noda said in a news conference broadcast live. The government wants the reactors to be operational ahead of a summertime energy crunch.

"We should restart the Ohi No. 3 and No. 4 reactors in order to protect the people's livelihoods," Noda said. "The Japanese society cannot survive if we stop all nuclear reactors or keep them halted."

Noda said a 15 percent power deficit is expected in the western region, a level he called "severe." Without nuclear energy, utilities would have to rely more heavily on expensive fossil fuel, which would increase electricity bills and financial strain on small businesses.

He said the public opinion is polarized but he has to make a decision because "I cannot put people's safety and livelihood at stake by not restarting the reactors."

Local consent is not legally required for restarting the reactors, though government ministers have promised to gain understanding from the prefecture. Noda said he understands the mixed feelings many people have about a startup. He promised to publish a long-term energy policy that aims to reduce nuclear dependency and promote renewable energy around August ? a delay from an earlier target of June.

Noda's speech Friday possibly removes the last obstacle before a resumption of the Ohi reactors. The Fukui governor made Noda's public appeal conditional to his consent for the startup. With the governor's consent, Noda is expected to make a final go ahead as early as next week, so the restart could take place within days.

Noda said the peak of energy demand for the summer is approaching, requiring a quick decision.

He said major cities around the Ohi plant should thank local residents for their burden of supplying electricity to towns around the west, despite the safety concerns, apparently seeking to gain their understanding for the resumption.

Fukui Gov. Issei Nishikawa took Noda's comment "seriously," indicating an approval, a local newspaper Fukui Shimbun reported.

Fukui, where 13 reactors are clustered in four complexes along the coast, is often called Japan's "Nuclear Alley," making the region Japan's most nuclear-dependent area.

Noda said the startup is not intended just for the summer, rejecting calls for limited operation by Osaka city and other nearby towns. He said he planned to start up more reactors whenever their safety is confirmed.

The government issued new safety guidelines in April to address residents' worries. In response, Kansai Electric Power Co. submitted its safety plans for two reactors at the plant, saying the full upgrades will take up to three years.

Some of the most crucial measures to secure cooling functions and prevent meltdowns as in Fukushima were installed, but more than one-third of the necessary upgrades on the list are still incomplete.

Filtered vents that could substantially reduce radiation leaks in case of an accident threatening an explosion, a radiation-free crisis management building and fences to block debris washed up by a tsunami won't be ready until 2015. This means the plant, as well as plant workers and residents, won't be fully protected from radiation leaks in case of a Fukushima-class crisis.

Masataka Shimizu, former president of Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the Fukushima plant, said its crisis management building installed in 2010 saved the crisis from becoming a catastrophe.

"It's horrifying just to imagine if it hadn't been there yet," Shimizu told a parliamentary accident inquiry Friday.

Noda, however, said that the safety measures are provisional and that they would have to be more closely examined when a new regulatory agency is installed. The step has been delayed due to demands by opposition parties to make it more independent than the government proposal.

3D movie captures fruit fly embryo turning into larva

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

You can now watch a fruit fly embryo turn into a larva without missing any of the action. Thanks to a new microscope created by Lars Hufnagel and his team at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, individual cells throughout a developing animal can now be filmed to create a high quality 3D movie of the process.

This 2D version of the film shows how the new microscope captures the fruit fly from all angles. If you've got your red and blue 3D glasses handy, you can also watch the anaglyphic version of the movie.

The time-lapse follows the embryo from about two hours old until it walks away 20 hours later, highlighting key stages of its development. Cells dive into the embryo's belly before separating into three layers prior to organ formation. Later, cells move around the rear of the embryo to its back and an opening on the dorsal side is filled in by surrounding cells.

This dynamic view of developing cells beats current microscope techniques, in which only one side of a living sample can be illuminated at once. To construct a 3D view from these shots, each side must be captured alternately, missing out on crucial details during the rapid changes in the cells.

The new microscope will be useful for investigating how organs and tissues form in different animals and what goes wrong as a result of mutations.

If you enjoyed this post, check out the first film of a fruit fly embryo or watch a 3D digital animation of a zebrafish embryo that tracks the first 24 hours after fertilisation.

GOP plays offense in medical device tax fight

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For Republicans, it's an irresistible trifecta: A bill that gives them an election-season chance to say they're fighting to protect jobs and cut taxes, even as it erodes financing for President Barack Obama's health care overhaul they despise.

So though it is destined to die in the Democratic-run Senate, GOP leaders plan to push legislation through the House this week to repeal an excise tax on the makers of medical devices sold in the U.S. sales.

Democrats say the growing medical device industry can afford the 2.3 percent tax due to take effect next January. They describe the tax as part of the price device manufacturers and other providers agreed to pay in exchange for the tens of millions of new customers they will get through the sweeping 2010 health care law's expansion of health insurance coverage.

That's not the view of Republicans or the medical device industry, which has lobbied Congress heavily to kill the tax before it takes hold. GOP lawmakers have named their legislation the Protect Medical Innovation Act, and insist it is not aimed at dismantling Obama's health care law.

"That's not part of my agenda," said chief sponsor Rep. Erik Paulsen, R-Minn., whose state is one of the centers of the nation's $130 billion-a-year medical device industry. He said the tax would eat up dollars that otherwise might go toward research and development ? and jobs.

The tax applies to items ranging from replacement joints to imaging equipment like CT scans. Exempted would be consumer products like eyeglasses, hearing aids and bandages.

Repealing the tax would cost the government an estimated $29 billion over the coming decade ? a small fraction of the health care law's cost. Republicans have not said how they will pay for it but say they will in time for House debate.

The House vote will occur as the Supreme Court prepares to rule later this month on the constitutionality of the health care law.

Democrats also hope to play some offense in the House debate.

Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich., said he will argue that Republicans are trying to unravel the health care overhaul instead of working on legislation to strengthen the economy, such as tax incentives proposed by Obama.

Republicans think taking no action on the economy "helps defeat the president" in November's election, Levin said. "They think it's good politics, but it's irresponsible."

For good measure, Democrats say the measure has no chance in the Senate.

"Of course we're not going to bring it up," said Adam Jentleson, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., citing Democrats' desire to defend the health care law.

But the dividing line is not completely partisan. Eleven of Paulsen's 238 co-sponsors are Democrats from medical technology centers like Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Utah. Minnesota's two Democratic senators, Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, say they favor eliminating the tax as has Democrat Elizabeth Warren, who is challenging GOP Sen. Scott Brown in Massachusetts.

Brown and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, have introduced similar bills.

U.S. medical device makers employ more than 400,000 people. The industry's largest trade group, AdvaMed, cites a study it commissioned that concluded the new tax could cost 43,000 of those jobs ? about 10 percent ? while doubling companies' tax bills and encouraging them to move plants overseas. The findings are often quoted by Republicans.

Critics say the study is biased and ignores the extra customers the industry will get as the health care law phases in. They also say the law won't force companies to move jobs overseas since it applies to all U.S. sales, no matter where the product is made.

"It doesn't make any sense," Robert Town, professor of health care management at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, said of such claims. He and other analysts said they believe the overall industry impact of the tax would be modest.

Though the industry is dominated by huge companies like Medtronic of Minneapolis and Boston Scientific of Natick, Mass., AdvaMed says most of its 300 members have 30 or fewer workers. The Medical Device Manufacturers Association, representing many small and medium-size companies, cites similar figures.

Industry officials say young companies could be especially hurt because the tax is levied on total sales, not profits. If a business sells $100 million worth of products and a $4 million profit, the $2.3 million it would owe would erode more than half its earnings ? excluding federal and state corporate taxes.

"It's going to cost jobs in our industry," said AdvaMed lobbyist J.C. Scott. For companies breaking even, he said, the tax "can push them to a place where they just can't move their business forward."

Company executives said their industry was too competitive to pass their added costs to customers. Town and other analysts said they believed that eventually, as with most excise taxes, those costs would be built into manufacturers' prices.

Kem Hawkins, president of stent maker Cook Medical of Bloomington, Ind., said a 2.3 percent tax would cost his company around $20 million, erasing 15 percent of earnings.

Combined with federal and state taxes, he said he'd be paying a tax rate of 58 percent. Opening a new plant employing 300 workers can cost $13 million, he said.

"It's the tipping point," he said of the excise tax. While he said he would protect the company's 7,500 U.S. jobs, he added, "Our new manufacturing is going abroad, make no mistake about it."

Gregory Sorensen, CEO of Siemens Healthcare North America, a giant maker of scanning devices, said the tax would force him to consider savings from reduced investments or U.S. jobs. He said his company has about $2 billion in annual sales and $500 million in profits in the U.S. ? meaning the tax could cost Siemens about $46 million a year.

"The money has to come from somewhere," he said.

(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

(AP) ? The Los Angeles Kings are one win away from putting a Hollywood ending on one of the most spectacular playoff runs in NHL history.

Jonathan Quick made 22 saves in his third shutout of the postseason, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams each had a goal and an assist, and the Kings rolled to the brink of the franchise's first title, beating the New Jersey Devils 4-0 in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals on Monday night to take a 3-0 series lead.

Alec Martinez scored the opening goal, and Jeff Carter and Williams added late power-play goals as the Western Conference champion Kings improved to 15-2 in the postseason. The eighth-seeded Kings jumped to a 3-0 lead in their fourth straight series ? a first in NHL history.

Game 4 is Wednesday night at Los Angeles.

"We're almost where we're trying to go, but we haven't won anything yet," captain Dustin Brown said. "We know what we have a chance to do, though. Having an opportunity to win a championship here could get rid of a lot of frustration for a lot of people."

Martin Brodeur stopped 17 shots, but the Devils couldn't beat the impenetrable Quick or his penalty-killers, who turned aside six power plays. New Jersey must accomplish just the fourth comeback from an 0-3 series deficit in NHL playoff history to win its fourth title.

After opening their first Stanley Cup finals appearance in 19 years with two overtime victories in New Jersey, the Kings survived another solid performance early in Game 3 by the Devils, who had ample opportunity to take an early lead.

New Jersey has been pretty good in the finals, but nothing has been able to slow down these Kings, who seem destined to become the first No. 8 seed to win the Stanley Cup.

"Before the series, we felt like this could happen, but we didn't think it would," said defenseman Drew Doughty, who has scored in every game of the finals. "This was definitely our best game of the series. I thought they took it to us in the first period, but we got a lot better."

The Devils had never lost three straight Stanley Cup finals games in the franchise's five appearances. New Jersey hadn't lost three straight games this season since late February.

The Kings had to survive their early nerves from playing in front of their title-starved fans, and they barely hung on at times against the Devils' dynamic forechecking in the first two periods. They got another peerless performance from Quick, who has allowed just 24 goals in 17 playoff games ? just two in the finals.

"These guys are working really hard," the 40-year-old Brodeur said of his teammates. "We've played some really good hockey. It's just that we can't find a way to score goals, and that's tough, because you need goals to win. But we're not quitting. We're going to work really, really hard, and we'll see where that's going to bring us. That's the attitude we've had all season long and through the playoffs. We're just facing a team right now that's doing everything right."

The Kings even got something from the power play that has been their weakest feature during the postseason, going 6 for 77 before Game 3. Carter scored his sixth goal of the postseason on a splendid setup pass from longtime teammate Mike Richards early in the third period ? and Williams followed 2:32 later with a slick goal in the slot, practically blowing the roof off the sold-out building.

Martinez scored his first career playoff goal early in the second period, and Kopitar followed about 10 minutes later with his third goal in four games off an impressive pass from Brown.

The Kings could celebrate their first title at home, but their only weakness in this charmed postseason has been Game 4. They're 10-0 on the road in the postseason, but failed to close out Vancouver and Phoenix at home in Game 4s.

No team has won the Cup with a sweep since Detroit wiped out Washington in the 1998 finals.

New Jersey largely controlled play before Martinez scored the game's first goal on a scramble in front of Brodeur, and the Devils repeatedly dominated puck possession while creating six power plays in the first two periods to none for the Kings. The Devils couldn't score against the Kings' stellar penalty-killers in front of Quick, who might have nosed ahead in the derby for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP with another shutout.

"It isn't any bigger or any smaller," Quick said of Game 4. "It's just another game, and we're trying to win it."

Although the Kings have been improbably dominant during the postseason, the Devils gave Los Angeles plenty of trouble in the Kings' two overtime victories in Newark last week. New Jersey's strong attack and Brodeur's solid goaltending nearly overwhelmed the Kings, who had to rely on Quick to reach overtime.

The Kings needed their penalty-killing again in the first period of Game 3 after Carter took a 4-minute penalty for high-sticking Adam Henrique while Los Angeles already was short-handed. Los Angeles killed one minute of 5-on-3 play before Marek Zidlicky lopped two more minutes off the power play with a penalty of his own to prevent a breakaway. New Jersey had just one shot to show for that lengthy advantage during the scoreless first period.

The Devils again dominated the puck early in the second period, keeping it in Los Angeles' end for long stretches, but Quick made saves with everything from his blocker to his shoulder.

The Kings went ahead when Dwight King created a scoring chance with a big hit, eventually hacking at the puck underneath Brodeur's pad in front. Martinez joined the effort with Trevor Lewis and got credit for the goal when the puck finally trickled in, scoring his first goal in his 23rd career playoff game. The Devils complained play should have been stopped.

Late in the period, Kopitar extended the lead on a stellar rush by the Kings' top line. Williams moved the puck into the zone and found Brown, who feathered a cross-ice pass to Kopitar for the Slovenian star's eighth goal of the postseason, giving Los Angeles its first two-goal lead since Game 2 of the Western Conference finals.

The Kings finally got a power play early in the third period, and Carter found Brodeur's top shelf with a pass from Richards. Williams then caught the Devils' penalty-killers napping, and the celebration was on.

Staples Center was packed to the rafters well before Wayne Gretzky took the ice for the ceremonial opening faceoff. Los Angeles' long-suffering hockey fans hadn't seen a Stanley Cup finals game since 1993, enduring two trips to the finals by the rival Anaheim Ducks in the previous decade while the Kings moved into their 44th season of existence without a championship.

The roaring crowd gave a standing ovation to Gretzky, the driving force behind the Kings' only other finals appearance.

The Kings got another boost from the return of left wing Simon Gagne, who hadn't played since Dec. 26 while recovering from a concussion. Gagne is a seven-time 20-goal scorer in his first season in Los Angeles, carrying ample playoff experience from his decade with the Philadelphia Flyers, including a trip to the 2010 Stanley Cup finals.

NOTES: The crowd of 18,764 was the largest in Staples Center history for a Kings game. Hundreds of fans in black jerseys gathered in the plaza outside several hours before game time, chanting slogans and carrying inflatable Cup replicas. ... Gagne played just over 6 minutes on 10 shifts. ... Lakers forward Pau Gasol, David Boreanaz, LL Cool J, David Beckham and Penguins star Sidney Crosby attended the game.
