Officing Today | Sales & Marketing | Branding Your Business Center ...
In part three of this series, we?ll look at the role branding has in driving customer loyalty at your business center.
So far in our business center branding series, we?ve looked at what branding is and how customer service plays into the strategy. In part three of this series, we?ll look at the role branding has in driving customer loyalty at your business center.Tom Varjan, a business marketing consultant in Vancouver, Canada, looks at branding from a farmer?s perspective. Although a brand may include a logo, shapes and colors, he believes a brand is about a process that connects with the target market in a way that increases the brand?s chances of getting the customer to buy its products or services again and again. Branding?s goal, then, is to create customer loyalty.
?A cattle farmer has two options. He can work with an expensive designer to develop the world?s fanciest branding iron with fancy shapes, gold-plated titanium handle and ergonomic hand grip, which takes his attention away from growing top-notch cattle and producing top-notch beef,? Varjan explains. ?Or he can go to the local blacksmith and have a branding iron made with a simple emblem that differentiates his cattle from others? cattle.?
A fancy brand doesn?t guarantee any one will buy mediocre beef. No mater how much time and effort the farmer invests to tout his fancy brand, customer admiration of a cute branding scheme won?t itself impact the farmer?s bottom line, especially if it?s followed up with a negative comment about the beef quality.
The farmer?s main focus should be on improving his farming practices, hiring enthusiastic employees and enhancing slaughtering practices to improve the quality of the beef. ?The farmer wants people to spread the message that his beef is the best beef money can buy. People don?t care about the fanciness of the logo,? Varjan argues. ?They just enjoy the beef and spread the word about it.?
This example can be translated to the business center industry. The take away is that the primary focus should be on providing distinguishing and memorable service. Clients, he says, will create the brand perception and loyalty through the stories they tell each other. All the rebranding efforts in the world won?t pay dirt if a business center doesn?t offer a service about which customers speak favorably. A brand is an experience. You can go to a McDonald?s in any city in the world and know what to expect.
Shel Horowitz, author of Principled Profit: Marketing That Puts People First, also views branding as customer experience. ?Branding is not about the logo, the store colors, or the uniforms. It?s about the customer experience, of which those surface things are one small part. It?s about building trust as well as consistency, about being there for your customers,? he argues. ?Those more superficial aspects of branding may help create an initial purchase, but after that, a second transaction will only happen if the customer feels that the product and the service met or surpassed expectations.?
With all this in mind, ask yourself: Is my business center brand driving customer loyalty? It may be time to take a customer survey so you can see your business center brand through the eyes of your clients.

Apple Appeals to High Court in China over IPad Trademark ...
The Higher People?s Court of Guangzhou heard the latest appeal from Apple today, after a lower court ruled in favor of Chinese tech company Proview, which says it owns the trademark ?IPad? in China.
A Lawyer for Apple told the court, ?The value of iPad?s trademark rocketed after Apple launched the tablet computer in January 2010, In the eyes of the consumer, iPad is associated with Apple. If the court decides that Proview wins the case, then this will confuse consumers and hurt their interests.?
In preparing for the launch of the iPad, Apple bought the ?global? iPad trademark from Proview Taiwan, believing it included the Chinese trademarks. Proview (Shenzen) has since claimed the contrary, and a Shenzhen court agreed that Apple does not own the rights to the name in China. Apple is now appealing that decision.
The verdict is not expected for weeks, but the ruling of the court is crucial to bringing an end to the legal dispute that began in 2009. Another trademark infringement case in Shanghai has halted proceedings pending the verdict of this appeal, and it stands to set a precedent across lesser courts in China.
If the court rules in favor of Proview again, Apple will be forced to settle or change the name of the IPad in China. Apple would most likely not change the name of its brand in such a large market, so a settlement seems likely.
On Tuesday, Proview announced its intentions to sue Apple for fraud in the United States, and terminate the 2009 trademark deal. Proview claims that Apple did not reveal its true identity when purchasing the iPad?s global trademark, thus ensuring the sale at a much lower price. Apple bought the trademarks through a special purpose company called IP Application Development Ltd., though this is not uncommon considering the high level of secrecy big tech firms employ during new product launches.
The larger goal of Proview seems to be to create as many problems for Apple as possible, from trying to halt the sale of IPads in China to filing multiple lawsuits all over the world, to force them into a settlement. The once prominent company has seen huge cuts and is now on the verge of bankruptcy.
Speaking after the hearing, Xiao Caiyuan, a lawyer for Proview, revealed the firms eagerness to settle.
?Regarding the trademark right, this is ? non-negotiable, however, if Apple wants to legally obtain permission to use the trademark, or to own the trademark by legal transfer, and it can provide a basket of proposals on settling the case outside of court, we would not refuse it.?

Bill O'Reilly calls Angelina Jolie 'emaciated'
Angelina Jolie at the Oscars.
?
By Courtney Garcia
It?s been much ado about Angelina Jolie?s leg since Sunday night?s Oscar telecast, but now it seems focus has shifted to her slim figure.
This week, Bill O?Reilly offered a ?reality check? for the 36-year-old star on his nightly program, ?The O?Reilly Factor,? suggesting her arguably frail figure could be cause for concern.
"Is it just me or is she looking mighty slim these days? Emaciated even?" posed the outspoken media personality to audiences. "I was kind of taken aback. Look at the arms on her! Once again the media largely ignoring Ms. Jolie's physical profile, but she is a role model for some women. I mean, she is slight. Let?s hope it?s nothing unusual."
O?Reilly wasn?t the only one with an opinion on Jolie?s figure. Us?Weekly reports her less-than-voluptuous frame?became an instant topic on Twitter Oscar night, at one point generating?3,399 tweets per minute.
Dr. Drew?Pinsky took a stance on his HLN show ?Dr. Drew,? saying to viewers, ?My eye tells me that she is dangerously malnourished.??
Jolie?was at the award show to present honors for best original screenplay and adapted screenplay, attending alongside her partner, Brad Pitt, who was nominated for his role in ?Moneyball.?
Many said?the star looked fine, and some took to task the weight obsession of Hollywood and those who follow its stars.
?She is GORGEOUS, period,? comments reader Janet Bowie on Us.
?She's definitely skinny,? Eileenla writes on The Huffington Post. ?So what? If she feels healthy, skinny is fine. If she wants to put on a few pounds, that's fine too. Perhaps if we stopped obsessing about weight and external appearances in this country and focused more on supporting our mental, emotional and physical health (what a concept!) people would worry less about how their clothes fit and concern themselves more with how fit their minds, hearts and bodies are.?
What do you think about the criticism of Angelina Jolie's weight?
?She doesn't look any thinner than half of Hollywood,? adds jstjuls.
Many pointed out that jabs about excess weight are considered offensive, asking why it's OK to go the other route. Wrote Kelsey Wallace on Bitch Magazine's site, "Body snarking of the "eat a sammich, skinny" variety is hardly different from body snarking of the "stop eating sammiches, fatty" variety that we (hopefully) know better than to post in our Facebook feeds."
?On the other hand,?others are siding with O?Reilly, even if it pains them to admit it.
??I was sitting at a bar watching the Oscars,? comments Zoidberg2016 on The Huffington Post. ?When she took to the stage, everyone else pretty much had the same opinion as Bill. And for once in my life, I agree with him.?

Part of Keystone XL pipeline to go ahead
Michael Marshall, environment reporter
(Image: KPA/Zuma/Rex Features )
Remember the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline, which Barack Obama rejected last month because environmental concerns hadn't been properly addressed? Well, a chunk of it is going to be built regardless - with Obama's approval.
Canadian company TransCanada will build a pipeline running from Cushing, Oklahoma to Houston and Port Arthur in Texas. According to a statement:
...what had been the Cushing to U.S. Gulf Coast portion of the Keystone XL Project has its own independent value to the marketplace and will be constructed as a stand-alone Gulf Coast Project, not part of the Presidential Permit process. The approximate cost is US$2.3 billion and subject to regulatory approvals, we anticipate the Gulf Coast Project to be in service in mid to late 2013.
In the same statement, TransCanada also announced that it would reapply to construct the remainder of the proposed pipeline.
Given the US government's support for the Oklahoma-Texas pipeline, it seems likely that the rest of Keystone XL will eventually be approved.
The Oklahoma-Texas pipeline will not cross the US-Canada border, so it does not need State Department approval. The?Edmonton Journal points out that it still needs to be approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the Clean Water Act, though.
The Oklahoma-Texas section does not include the most controversial part of Keystone XL, which would pass through Nebraska. Environmentalists have raised concerns about the sensitive Nebraska Sand Hills ecosystem, and the nearby Ogallala aquifer that supplies drinking water to people in eight US states .
The Associated Press quoted White House press secretary Jay Carney as saying that Obama approved of the decision to press ahead:
Moving oil from the Midwest to the world-class, state-of-the-art refineries on the Gulf Coast will modernise our infrastructure, create jobs, and encourage American energy production.
Bloomberg explains that the new pipeline will relieve a glut of oil that has built up in Cushing:
The pipeline will help relieve oversupplies that have accumulated in the US Midwest because of a lack of pipeline capacity to carry the oil to refineries on the coast. Cushing is the delivery point for crude oil traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange. A lack of pipeline capacity between Cushing and the Gulf Coast, where most refineries are located, has caused U.S. oil to trade at a discount to imports.
If it goes ahead, Keystone XL would run alongside the existing Keystone pipeline, which carries oil from Alberta, Canada, to Cushing and also to sites in Illinois, and extend it all the way south to the US Gulf coast. The existing and proposed pipelines are shown in this map on the TransCanada website.
Apart from the risk of leaks, Keystone XL is also controversial because of its impact on the climate. The oil it would carry is derived from tar sands, so extracting and processing it requires a lot of energy. As a result, oil from tar sands produces more greenhouse gas than conventional oil.
Last week the European Union voted on a proposal to label fuel oils according to their carbon footprint, which would have effectively banned the import of oil from tar sands into Europe. However the vote ended in deadlock, so the final decision will not come for several months.
